On November 22, 2016 Rebecca Muse Hunt was shot by Lumberton Police Officer Daniel Maurice Smith in the parking lot of the Dollar General Store located on Martin Luther king Jr in Lumberton. The documents say state that Rebecca had allegedly stolen a case of alcoholic beverages from Food Lion and the officer recognize the vehicle as the one involved in the theft. According to witnesses Rebecca was attempting to drive away and the officer fired shots and Billy was in handcuffs at that time. The Police Officer was eventually cleared of any wrong doing by the Robeson County District Attorney. There was attempts made to interview Billy Gene Hammonds in regards to this case that but they were unsuccessful in finding him,
