Marcello Rollando Speaks with Dr. Martin, UVa VP for Diversity and Equality

Dr. Martin has served in a variety of roles in support of diversity and equity at the University of Virginia, including as assistant dean in the School of Medicine, and as assistant and associate vice president in the UVA Office of Diversity. In 2011, Dr. Martin was appointed Vice President and Chief Officer for Diversity and Equity at UVA.

Dr. Martin established the Emergency Medicine Center for Education, Research and Technology (EMCERT) and the Life-Saving Techniques course for medical students at UVA, using computerized human patient simulation. He has published widely in the medical literature and contributed chapters to textbooks in his area of expertise. He was recently selected as one of “the top 100 most influential black graduates of NC State University,” and in 2007 was appointed by Governor Tim Kaine to serve on the Secure Commonwealth Panel and as vice chair of the Virginia Tech Incident Review Panel.

Dr. Martin served for 12 years as a board member of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine(SAEM), and is a past president of both SAEM and the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors. In 1994, he received the Joseph F. Waeckerle Founder’s Award from the national Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association. He is a 2008 recipient of the SAEM Diversity Interest Group Leadership Award, named the Marcus L. Martin Leadership Award in his honor. He also received, in 2008, a “Citizen of the Year” award for the state of Virginia from Omega Psi Phi fraternity.
