Trudy Goodman, the founder and guiding teacher of InsightLA, a meditation and teaching center in Los Angeles that hosts spiritual icons such as Thich Nhat Hanh, Jack Kornfield, Joseph Goldstein, Stephen Batchelor and Sharon Salzberg, will join me to talk about how she used the Buddhist teachings to retrain her long-neglected intuition. Ten years ago, Trudy had the perfect life – or so it seemed on the outside. She was a resident Zen teacher at the Cambridge Buddhist Association, guiding teacher of the Institute for Psychotherapy and Meditation, a well-known psychotherapist with a full private practice, Harvard-educated and a consultant to prestigious Independent Schools in the Boston area. Her resume included accolades and honors; she was highly respected in her professional and spiritual communities, but her marriage to a Zen Master, one of the first two Westerners ever to receive dharma transmission from his Asian teacher, was seriously on the rocks. As successful as such a life could appear on the outside, inside she was overriding her intuition and living a lie.Her road to recovery included a heart-breaking divorce, a move to the west coast (where she started InsightLA) and the rediscovery of her intuition through her meditation and spiritual practice. Trudy has studied Buddhist meditation for 35 years, with Asian and Western teachers, and is a contributing author: Compassion and Wisdom in Psychotherapy, (Guilford Press, 2011); Clinical Handbook of Mindfulness (Springer, 2008); Mindfulness and Psychotherapy, (Guilford Press, 2005).
