Behold, thy Lord said to the angels: "I will create a vicegerent on earth." They said: "Wilt Thou place therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood?- whilst we do celebrate Thy praises and glorify Thy holy (name)?" He said: "I know what ye know not." – Holy Qur’an 2:30
ASA,
When I review the White House Statement on Barack Obama’s Executive Order on guns, I have to admit that I see very little to disagree.
While those would argue that much of our public perception on guns, is motivated by press sensationalism, especially on the left, with a clear, anti-gun sentiment, it goes without saying, rights, even guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment, are inextricably connected with responsibility.
Yet, organizations, like the NRA, have cried “foul”, on the basis that this order violated the 2nd Amendment, and others who argue the legality of such, which bypasses Congress, whose job is to enact binding law.
It seems to some, that to expand background checks (despite existing policy), places undue burden on legitimate gun dealers and potential owners, and the issue of mental illness, in light of the Virginia Tech and Sandy Hook carnages, has taken center stage.
Obama, to his credit, did conduct a Town Hall Meeting on the topic, and from what I’ve gathered, a pretty diverse group of “pros” and “cons”.
On Saturday, January 9th, we will discuss the issue in depth, as well as:
