Kathleen Stross, my guest this evening, will talk about some of the problems that people have (particularly head-injury survivors) in navigating spaces. She comes from a physical therapy background and works with rebalancing life for survivors of traumatic brain injuries, at the Vestibular Disorders Association. That is, any issue regarding dizziness, vertigo, balance, ataxia, postural stability, and the Vestibular-Ocular reflex is her area of expertise. Admittedly, this is a huge category, but it all relates to vestibular problems. Unfortunately, head-injury survivors universally have problems navigating spaces.

She will discuss why brain injuries seemingly always cause vestibular disorders. What exactly are these disorders? And what can we do to improve our gait and movement on a permanent basis? These questions lead to the more important functional issues of FALL PREVENTION and HOME SAFETY.

I know these questions are of concern to me, and I imagine that these are not idle queries for a lot of head-injured folks. Let's face it, our balance is not what it used to be. She will talk about why this is and what we can do about it. On this issue, she has written a home safety assessment to help prevent falls in the home.
