Fallon, NV – In the 1950s, if you had sex with someone, you had to marry them! That was the social pressure. You laugh, but it's the truth! This frustration culminated in the Sexual Revolution of the late 1960s, a revolution against sexual tyranny and the control of our sexuality.

As the co-founder of the Sandstone Retreat, Barbara Williamson had a front row seat to the Sexual Revolution. She recounts the story of Sandstone Retreat in her book, Free Love and the Sexual Revolution.

“It occurred to me that I should commemorate the actual happening of Sandstone Retreat because no one had ever been so bold as to create an environment like that before,” says Williamson. “People loved having that sexual freedom.”

Founded in 1968, the Sandstone Retreat was a nudist colony and communal sex retreat. On 14 private acres overlooking Malibu and the ocean, the Williamsons and their new friends, including some rather well-known figures of the era, practiced open sexuality.

“It was considered decadence and a lot of people having a great time partying. We decorated the place beautifully; it was elegant,” recalls Williamson. “But it was all designed for opening and awakening our consciousness and learning about our divine self. We were there to enhance relationships.”

According to Williamson, sex has nothing to do with love. Sandstone’s philosophy was that jealousy was incredibly corrosive.

“It was never really about sex. It was about love. Love is the answer. Love is the foundation, the most essential idea to experience in our lifetime. If we have a foundation of love for all of ourselves, everything else falls into place.”
