Snellville, GA – Terriyln Rivers-Cannon is a school social worker and the founder of K.A.T.I.E., an organization dedicated to providing outreach services to empower young people from middle school to college. K.A.T.I.E. stands for “Karing Actions Towards Inspiring Eagles.”
“Just because you can't see those stars in front of you doesn't mean that you can't continue to reach for those stars,” says Rivers-Cannon. “An eagle can soar to endless heights as long as it keeps moving forward. That's what I want to instill in others.”
Rivers-Cannon says her eagles from all different avenues. Some may be in a homeless situation. Some may come from abusive families. No matter their circumstances, the goal is for them to strive to do something better by believing in themselves.
“It is my mission to provide individualized and personalized sessions with anyone who seeks my assistance, all while promising to give them my full attention”, say Rivers-Cannon. "When you listen with empathy, sympathy and respect, individuals are more likely to share their stories and be receptive to change."
In addition to her work with K.A.T.I.E., Rivers-Cannon is president of the School Social Workers Association of Georgia (SSWAG). She says one of her goals is to offer scholarships for teen moms who would like to go to college in the area of social work.
“Social work is my passion, my love, and it was my aunt's passion and love, too,” says Rivers-Cannon. “I take it as a blessing. I'm humbled by it and even more humbled to see the impact I've had on these children's futures.”
