Jones, Writ Writer for George Jackson University.  In October 1975, J.T. was incarcerated in the Dallas County Jail facing charges for aggravated robbery and felony possession of Marijuana. The tank that he was assigned to in the jail was segregated.  While there, he met a brother who had served several years in the TDC and who was back on bench-warrant. This brother was his first encounter with a writ- writer, he encouraged J.T. not depend on court appointed counsel and to study the law and fight for his freedom. He also told him that while in prison, there was always danger of reprisal against writ-writers from the prison authorities.  He took this brother’s advice to heart, and immediately started researching the issues surrounding his charges. However, there was problem – the law book cart would rarely make it to their tank (a black tank), however this cart made daily trips to the white tank across the hall. This prompted him to write his first letter to a court, a complaint that they were not being given the same access to the law books as their white counterparts. Within a couple of days the white inmates who were responsible for bringing the cart around were knocking our cell door down trying to get books to them.  Tune in to here more of J.T.'s story of his experience on the inside and how he utilized writ writing to not only free himself, but the amazing story he has to share about others that his expertise lending to freeing them and erasing over seven life sentences.  Also we will talk with some of our other GJU organizers about our Mission of a Parole and Clemency review Board and The george jackson University Defense Committee.
