Masonry: The Purpose

In the life of every organization, there is a time to stand back, to consider the purpose intended and whether it has achieved.  Masonry did not start out as a tide rushing into every nook and cranny of society. What it became was a process.  When we began writing about that process was when the question began: Is that all there is?  

Organizing around a process has been the crowning achievement of masonry.  That and being forged out of necessity, if it is possible to claim that the necessity of masonry came easily to the mind.  The platform of masonry was intellect.  One had to be a thinker in order to understand the significance of what was being proposed.  The need to be contemplative was quickly overcome by the appeal of being associated with thoughtful discussion between grown men who made no claim to piety but had simpler objectives- reason and scholarship.
