Variations are known by different names; flattery, advertising, it is a play on confirmation bias- agreeing with what confirms preconceived notions. Drink this brand, drive this car and be manly, attractive to the ladies. Use this cosmetic and rediscover timeless youth. Get rich quick. Gain power and insight. Live longer. As the story goes, Narcissus was walking past the pool. Today might be forgiven for feeling burdened by an unrelenting force of competition for our attention in a materialistic culture. Politicians deceive. Snake oil salesmen still pitch us the latest cure. "...sometimes words have two meanings." Isn't it reasonable then, to think that bright, thoughtful young men approaching middle age might question if the clamour is all there is? Where has authenticity gone, questioning yet hopeful for sincere, genuine affirmation? Imperfect as we might be, we follow beautiful ideas, beautiful mathematics that do just that. For some, Freemasonry can be the anecdote of illusion, shallowness, flattery. Less than our best effort is a compromise to ritual that we might want to rethink. Understanding isn't competition. But through the muscular arguements is an intimate conversation, where ideas can be tried and tested. After all, insight happens within the mind of those who watch; who listen; quietly. Be that Mason.
