Measles is one of the world’s most contagious diseases. A measles vaccine has been available over 50 years. Yet our infants and children are being killed by a disease that can be prevented by this vaccine. Infants, children who are not vaccinated or have incomplete vaccination are at the greatest risk. The most serious complications can be: blindness, encephalitis (an infection that causes brain-swelling), severe diarrhea which causes dehydration, ear infections, or severe respiratory infections such as pneumonia. Most deaths are from complications, with children under 5 years mostly affected. Measles complications can result in lifelong disability such as permanent brain damage, blindness due to the red inflamed eyes or hearing loss due to ear infections. Treatment requires medical attention. Learn how to protect your child from measles. This is an important podcast for all parents.
