The LizyT Show with Author Philip J Bryson

Phillip J. Bryson, Douglas and Effie Driggs Professor of Economics in the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University, retired in 2010. His career had begun with a PhD from The Ohio State University and an Assistant Professorship at the University of Arizona in 1967. In 1988 he left Arizona to join the Marriott School Faculty of BYU. He taught and researched comparative economic systems, international economics, and the history of economic analysis. Early on his publications were mostly on the central planning systems of East Germany and the Soviet Union.

Professor Bryson became familiar with the austere life of the people of socialist economies while living in Berlin, Germany and during numerous research visits to Europe. Over his research career he spent time living in West Berlin and East Berlin (Karlshorst), Munich, Marburg, Duisburg, and Moscow.  He was living in Berlin when the Wall was erected in August of 1961. During the week in which the Wall was opened he was attending a conference in the Reichstag in West Berlin in direct proximity to the Wall. Thus, he experienced personally both the beginning and the end of the Berlin Wall. After the Marxist-Leninist economies of East Europe were shut down and a period of transition to market orientation began throughout the region, Professor Bryson researched the fiscal decentralization of the public sectors of the Czech and Slovak Republics.
