On June 24th, 2015, despite overwhelming opposition from Floridians, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approved a statewide hunt October 24-30th to kill Florida’s black bears. Though lacking a reliable recent survey of the current bear population, the FWC established a goal of 320 dead bears statewide.
2015 saw Florida’s first state-sanctioned black bear hunt in 21 years. 304 mothers, cubs and adult males were killed in the name of population management.
The FWC is now gathering 2015 data to determine whether to hold another hunt this year.
Bill 1096 was introduced by Senator Darren Soto in the 2016 Florida legislative session. The Florida Black Bear Habitat Restoration Act will secure the future of the Florida Black Bear. Without your support, this bill will not get the priority it deserves!
Please consider contacting your state Senator, https://www.flsenate.gov/Senators/#Senators and urge them to support the Florida Black Bear Habitat Restoration Act 1096 of 2016.
