Our guest is Meg Tanner

Meg Tanner of Atlanta, GA was told that her older brother, Curtis Tanner, living in Birmingham, AL, who had been dealing with complications after a near drowning in 2003, was essentially out of his mind and had a disease that was “eating his brain away.” Then read in an email written by his guardian that his doctor said he had two to five years to live because his disease is a death sentence, and that the guardian didn’t think he would last five years.

After receiving a phone call from the other brother in June 2015 interrogating her about a letter Curtis was “able to get out of his facility” to her to pass on to their dad because he’s not allowed to send mail without permission, and after seeing Curtis in person at their mother’s burial service who was looking and sounding very much like himself, she along with other family strongly suspected something was seriously wrong  As an attorney stated in 2015, it was obvious to family, friends, DHR APS, and facility personnel that his placement in a nursing home was inappropriate and that any normal loving family would allow him to live at home or in a less restrictive environment.

What his sister never imagined is that while many people including many professionals were horrified by his: living conditions, denied civil liberties, isolation, sensory deprivation, lack of rehabilitation and medical treatments, restrictions on visitors including his daughter, non-existent access to any real meaningful activities, neglect of necessities and care, and inability to attend church, none would be able and/or willing to improve Curtis’ situation.
