Listen to this edition of the Pan-African Journal: Worldwide Radio Broadcast hosted by Abayomi Azikiwe, editor of the Pan-African News Wire. The program features our regular PANW report with dispatches on the warning by the South African government calling for an end to violent protest over the issue of free education inside the country; there have been 56 deaths of Kenyan Defense Forces troops on the border with neighboring Somalia; the Ethiopian government has declared a state of emergency in the aftermath of the unrest that has spread throughout the Horn of Africa state over the last few weeks; and the disaster in Haiti worsens in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew where hundreds have died and thousands more left homeless. In the second hour we continue our monthlong commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense by listening to a rare archival recording of Stokely Carmichael, later known as Kwame Ture, delivering a major address at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) on May 24, 1967. Carmichael discussed Black Power, Civil Rights, urban rebellions, coalitions with whites, violence and nonviolence, and the United States imperialist war against Vietnam, among other issues of the day.
