Most people think about Parkinson's disease as being just what it's called: a disease — a distinct clinical entity, which can be treated as a thing to itself. In fact, however, like all the other diseases of aging, it's the result of the lifelong accumulation of specific kinds of cellular and molecular damage that happen to all of us as part of the biological aging process. PD results from specific kinds of aging damage accumulating in key parts of the brain and nervous system, but similar damage accumulates in other aging tissues, causing dysfunction in those local tissues; these degenerative processes get labeled "diseases" when they reach a tipping point and the tissue can no longer carry out its normal function.

The good news is that we now have a strategy for preventing, delaying, and one day even reversing Parkinson's and other diseases of aging through the revolution in rejuvenation biotechnology: therapies that directly remove, repair, replace, or render harmless the damage of aging. By clearing out that damage from the tissues, functionality can be restored and youthful health and vigor with it.

SENS Research Foundation https://www.sens.org is a 501(c)3 medical research charity that is working hard to accelerate the development of a comprehensive suite of rejuvenation biotechnologies, to bring the benefits as soon as possible to as many people as possible. My guest today is Michael Rae, Science Writer at SENS Research Foundation, and coauthor with cofounder Dr. de Grey of "Ending Aging:"
