Excerpts from her book:

"I used to volunteer at a week-long Sickle Cell summer camp. I did this for a few years, volunteering as one of their many doctors to care for the children,. But it became no so fun when one year I spent half the time curled up on a bed in the infirmary myelf! What a sight! So, "I ran away" by deciding not to return to the camp that following year. "

"I was part of an online support group, for many years. This community really helped me to feell included and understood with my Sickle Cell disease.  When I became a doctor, I started answering medical questions for the group. However, there came a time when the medical questions came fast and furious, and I could not respond to them quickly enought. It reveraled my limitations and left some people with unanswered questions and hurt feelings. I was failing the very community that was so dear to me. "
