Ruy Diaz lives with a someday.

Tomás Diaz, his father, dreams of fighting for Spain in the Granada War. But little Ruy, all of ten-years old, just wants a friend. And then their someday comes. One fine April morning in the year 1486, Tomás Diaz and his son Ruy leave their home in Bruges, and take the road south to Spain.

Ruy loves Spain, but his father's orders take them to an altogether more perilous destination: Granada, the last kingdom of Andalus. Struggling to master the social complexities of a foreign city, Ruy Diaz is cast into a late-medieval culture war, and discovers in a strange society a stranger mystery: what became of the lost son of the old scribe? And why do the people speak of a demon lurking in the hills beyond the walls?

The drums of Granada captivate Ruy. But try as he may, he cannot grasp the larger rhythms in play in the fates of tribes and armies, brigands and sultans, gypsies and priests. Ruy doesn't really know what to think about Granada. Ruy just wants a friend.
