The Role and Image of Women in Scripture

Many people in society charge that sexism, racism even classism can be traced back to religious writing, or the misapplication thereof. Today WORDS MAKE PEOPLE will discuss The Role and Image of Women in Scripture (the word of G-d) with three distinguished female leaders representing perspectives from the three major Abrahamic faiths, Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

The world’s major religions have preserved what appears to be “male privileged” traditions that has rendered women to be “second-class” believers not only socially but also within the sphere of religious teachings and practice.

Joining us today representing Judaism is Rabbi Shelley Goldman, the assistant rabbi at Congregation Beth-El Zedeck synagogue in Indianapolis, IN; Ayesha Mustafa, the Senior Editor of Muslim Journal in Chicago; and Reverend Kelly Bates Oglesby, the associate pastor at First Free Will Baptist Church in Indianapolis.

We will ask our panelist to speak on the role and the image of women in their respective books of revelation, addressing verses on women that elevate females and then scriptural verses that challenge their thinking or that seems to relegate females to positions of inferiority.

We plan to delve into what did Moses, Christ Jesus and Muhammed say about the role and image of women?
