"Halal" is an Arabic word that means lawful; permissible. It applies to the meats that Muslims are allowed to eat; however, the wider application of halal (lawful and permissible) also applies to the dress (clothing), speech, and overall conduct of every Muslim.
Allah gives us clear instructions in Al-Qur'an in Chapter 2:168 يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ كُلُوا۟ مِمَّا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ حَلَـٰلًا طَيِّبًا وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا۟ خُطُوَٰتِ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ إِنَّهُۥ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ مُّبِينٌ
"O ye people! Eat of what is on earth, Lawful (Halal) and good (tayyiban); and do not follow the footsteps of the evil one, for he is to you an avowed enemy."
In June 1999, Imam W. Deen Mohammed said, "If we concentrated on nothing but providing halal meats to our community, that business venture would bring enough money into the community to build the Mosque Cares Project. So, we need to just think bigger."
Our special guest Akbar Salaam not only established a halal meat company to serve the community, but he also helped develop the “Manner and Condition” for slaughtering and processing halal meat and poultry in the state of New Jersey and USDA. His contribution led to the creation of the standard procedures for the halal industry throughout the country.
