Join WORDS-MAKE-PEOPLE on Sunday July 17th from 1-3 p.m. (Eastern Time), for an outstanding discussion with our Beloved Imam Darnell Karim, a lifetime member of the Islamic development of African Americans and a childhood friend of Muslim American leader Imam W. Deen Mohammed. Imam Darnell Karim has peened a book titled, "The First National Independent Islamic School System In America." Join us as we discuss this new publication and its importance to the our Muslim American Islamic life. The book identifies the key roles played by W. D. Fard, Elijah Muhammad and Clara Muhammad and their followers in the 1940s, the 1950s, the 1960s and the 1970s in developing the community in whose womb the University of Islam developed. In spite of pressure from external forces and conflict from within, the leadership and the members fought to preserve the school from external influences, and to educate their children to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to be for themselves. This book describes their success and the rewards of their success. Out of the first graduating class came the character, the proficiency and the preservation of the community’s future. Upon the death of the Hon. Elijah Muhammad, the leadership of his community was chosen by the members who attended the annual convention that year and Imam W. Deen Mohammed took his place at the head of the organization. He transformed the original Nation of Islam in many ways over the course of his leadership giving the organization and its members worldwide recognition and distinction.
