Join WORDS-MAKE-PEOPLE on Sunday, November 20, 2022, from 1-3 p.m. Eastern Time (EST) for a discussion titled, "In Defense of Kyrie Irving." He has received a 5-game suspension from the NBA and public ridicule for not apologizing according to the wish of certain segments of our society. Is this treatment fair?
O you who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah, even as against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, and whether it be (against) rich or poor: for Allah can best protect both. Follow not the lusts (of your hearts), lest ye swerve, and if ye distort (justice) or decline to do justice, verily Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do. – Qur’an chapter 4: verse 135
There are strong undercurrents flowing in the defense of Kyrie, especially after he publicly apologized twice. American justice, the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment’s freedom of speech protects Kyrie – regardless if we agree or disagree with him. Kyrie, as with all Americans, has freedom of conscious, freedom of religion, freedom of thought. Let us remember that Irving publicly distanced himself from the film by saying it does not “reflect my morals and principles.”
For many within the African American community, our defense of Kyrie is also our declaration – not a plea or a request – yes, a declaration that we can and will independently apply our intellects, using our own brains to come to our own conclusions, opinions, and resolutions on matters that affect our families and communities.
