Whenever a person reports a crime, the police always investigate the person who reported the crime. They do this in order to clear the person of any wrongdoing, so that they can focus on getting the person who actually did it. But they suspect the person who reported the crime first. The messenger is always a suspect. Have you ever told a friend that their significant other is messing around on them? If you have, you may have received mixed reactions. With some people, they may have been thankful. With other people, they may have distanced themselves from you because you either know too much, or because   they think that you have an ulterior motive for spilling the beans, You are the messenger, but you're a suspect too.
