Thomas Kinslow is the creator of the Dewey Does children’s book series, and president and CEO of A Dewey Does Company, Corp. In 1999, he created Dewey Does, an animated character inspired by his then 7-year-old son, Jonathan. He admits that his son wasn’t the star athlete or the first pick for a team sport, still Jonathan displayed a positive disposition and passion for sports. Kinslow wanted to embody his son’s spirit in the character Dewey Does, who can “do anything” with the right attitude, reinforcing a message of perseverance and fitness. He chose to tell the stories of Dewey Does through the prism of sports, because it’s accessible, and something that crosses racial, ethnic and gender lines. In 2000, Kinslow self-published the first book in the Dewey Does book series – that is, “ Dewey Does 4 Prez.A successful entrepreneur, today, Kinslow runs his own insurance agency and promotes diversity in the children’s literature community. Under Kinslow’s direction, the Dewey Does children’s book series kickstarted a new campaign called, “I See Me!” during Children’s Book Week (May 1-7, 2017) this year. The campaign is as part of a Dewey Does Diversity initiative, introducing a new generation of readers to the children’s books, and spotlighting the Dewey Does series as one of the few children’s books in the industry that feature multicultural characters and content. #WeNeedDiverseBooks http://deweydoes.com/
