Tonight's Guest Is Kat Duesterhaus,

She is a survivor of sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking. She is activist and organizer at heart, and a freelance digital media professional by trade. Kat lives in Miami and serves as Communications Director, Digital Organizer, and Freedom From Violence Task Force Chair with Florida’s National Organization for Women, and Treasurer and Co-Chair of Housing Justice with Miami’s Coalition to Advance Racial Equity. Kat is also a member of Palm Beach, Martin, and St. Lucie County’s Sexual Assault Response Teams, Florida Council Against Sexual Violence, and RAINN’s National Speaker Bureau. For the past 3 sessions Kat has advocated and organized to help pass 3 Rape Law Reform bills, including Donna’s Law - which removed the time limits for prosecuting rape against a minor, Gail’s Law - which established a Rape Kit Tracking System for Florida, and SB 1530 - which required Trauma Informed Training for Law Enforcement Officers in Florida and established Sexual Assault Response Teams statewide. And while in this last session almost all of the bills Kat was supporting did not pass - including Greyson’s Law and the bill to Close Florida’s Incapacitated Rape Loophole - Kat was able to organize over 70,000 letters to legislators from citizens across Florida, filling lawmakers’ inboxes and making sure the voice of the everyday Floridian was heard in the Capital.
