This past Easter a 10 year little girl was helping her mom prepare dinner. As they worked side by side, the little girl asked her mom why she cut off the ends of the Easter ham. Her mother's response was "that is the way my mother prepared the ham for the oven." As it seemed like a terrible waste of food and the little girl wanted to understand the reason for this. So she went into her grandmother's bedroom and asked if it was true that she used to cut off the ends of the ham before putting it into the oven. When her grandmother said yes, the little girl again asked "why". Her grandmother simply replied, "That is the way my mother prepared the ham for the oven." Well, knowing that her dad had just left to go pick up her great-grandmother from the nursing home, the little girl anxiously waited. Once her great-grandmother arrived and was seated at the dinner table, the little girl asked if she too really cut the ends of the ham off before putting it in the oven. When her great-grandmother replied yes, the little girl one more time asked "Why?" The little girl prepared herself for getting the same old answer - because that is the way her mother did it. But was pleasantly surprised when her great-grandmother said, "Because we did not have a pan big enough for the ham, so we needed to cut off the ends so the ham would fit into the pan."
