Tonight's special guest is Gwen Federico, MSW, from the DASI organization in Newton, NJ. The Domestic Abuse & Sexual Assault Intervention Services (DASI) is a non-profit established in 1984 where the mission is providing comprehensive services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence and their families in Sussex County. Services are free and confidential. They provide assistance to domestic violence victims and survivors, to children exposed to domestic violence, to sexual assault and abuse survivors. Among the many services they offer are a safe house (when home is not safe), a 24-hour helpline for assistance, information, support, & referrals, supportive counseling & groups, supportive accompaniment to hospital, law enforcement proceedings & court hearings and legal, social service & housing advocacy. In addition, DASI offers community education and prevention programs for groups of all ages in a variety of formats. The Interpersonal Violence Prevention Program (IVPP) provides presentations for youth. Interventions in Domestic and Sexual Violence is a 60-hour course for staff and volunteers which is also offered to professionals of other human service organizations. Professional in-service training is available to those who work with families affected by domestic and sexual violence. They also have a comprehensive Volunteer Training Program. Presenters are trained in counseling and crisis intervention, and so are able to meet the needs of individuals who come forward and disclose abuse or assault after a presentation.
