Tonight's special guest is John Thompson from New York, child abuse survivor and group facilitator for his local Adult Survivors of Child Abuse meeting. John and his siblings were born to parents who had both suffered abuse and had great mental problems resulting in their often being psychotic. He says, "My mother usually initiated the abuse then my father would join in. My sister became the focus of my mother's own self hatred and I became the focus of my mother's hatred of her father. When I was about six my mother was so mentally ill the family was split up and I and my two brothers went to live with one of my father's brothers who tortured me every day. I would call him criminally insane." In adulthood he was eventually seen by a Freudian therapist who almost never spoke. "Very few therapists at that time received any training dealing with child abuse," says John. "After about eight years I sensed I needed something more from my therapist. I grew up with people who never talked with me and now I had a therapist who never talked. I wanted to connect with other survivors. I wanted to hear what they went through, how they dealt with their experiences and what the whole experience meant to them." Early in 2000 he found the site for The Morris Center and the ASCA program. A couple years were to pass before their first group started up in New York. "I contacted the organizer and started going to meetings. A few years later I took over co-facilitating the meeting and also began volunteering to read and answer messages that come in to the ASCA site."
