Tonight's special guest is Kimberly Shannon Brusk from Atlanta, a survivor and an activist who fights against Domestic Violence and for Gun Control. She's a frequent contributor about these issues to the Huffington Post. The 8th time she reported her abusive spouse to the police her husband was finally arrested, and four days later, after he'd been released, he came after her with a shotgun. Ms. Brusk had been married for almost a decade, but the power control issues started within the first year. Looking back there were definite signs of problems to come. Having full control of the finances, keeping Kimberly from working, checking up on emails and phone calls and needing to know where his wife was at all times seemed at first endearing, but should have been red flags, a warning. His obsessions and need for control even had him threatening to commit suicide if Kimberly didn't stay with him. Stalking was the last straw. Convinced she needed to escape, Ms. Brusk filed for divorce and sought the help of a women's support group. When her husband found out, he assaulted her. Kimberly stresses the need for women to have a support and safety system already in place, before they leave the abusive husband. She recommends a packed bag, making copies of important documents, having a pre-planned safe place to go, notifying police and contacting help groups like the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-SAFE). "It's the riskiest time in your relationship," she says. Many of her interviews and speeches can be found on Kimberly's YouTube Channel.
