Tonight's special guest is Collette Sinnott from Alberta, Canada, sexual abuse survivor, author of "Should I Tell My Secret?" and community activist. After dealing with and surviving sexual abuse herself, and having three children, Collette realized the vast majority of those not talking about abuse with their kids just needed a simple tool to help them start the conversation, something that would take the fear out of it for both parties. Collette says, "We hope to have our book "Should I Tell My Secret?" in every home that has a child as well as every elementary school across Canada and the USA. Further she explains, “When we eliminate the secret, we take power away from the problem." It is estimated 1/3 girls and 1/6 boys are sexually abused which means you most likely know a child who is living in silent turmoil. People who abuse look and act just like everyone else. They often go out of their way to appear trust worthy. This is the reason we need to know how to have the conversation of abuse safely and effectively with a child. Child sexual abuse is a direct cause of many problems facing society today, such as drug and alcohol addictions, mental illness, teen pregnancy, prostitution, and criminal acts including sexual crimes.
