Tonight's special guest is Elaine Crocker-Bey from Virginia, an abuse survivor and talk show host. Elaine is the epitome of a survivor. Her life's journey has not been an easy one. She was a victim of sexual abuse as a child on more than one occasion and as a result of being blamed and shamed and alone carrying the burden of what had been done to her, she went through 10+ years of drug addiction. Drugs for Elaine were similar to leaving this world as all memories of her dreadful past floated away as if they never existed. What she didn't realize was that she was trying to kill herself. Then, 23 years ago, Elaine was arrested due to a stupid "scam" she and her then boyfriend were involved in, and she spent 3 months in a county jail. It was there that she began taking the steps to get clean and sober. Once released she went into rehab for 90 days and became an active member of the Narcotics Anonymous program which provided the information, tools and resources she needed to help her better her circumstances. Instead of asking "Why me?" Elaine asks "Why not me?" and uses her past experiences to help others. She has volunteered in prison ministry, she's created a BLOG where she encourages and inspires other survivors of sexual abuse and she runs an online radio show titled "Experience Strength Hope" where she interviews survivors of sexual abuse with the purpose of instilling the hope in others.
