Tonight's special guest is Lorna Littner, LMSW, MS (Public Health), from New York City, a new member of the NAASCA family appearing on the show for the first time. We know it won't be her last! A survivor of sexually abused by her grandfather when she was 12, she's now a professional. "I was able use the therapy I was involved in when I was in my early 20’s to do recovery work on these events," she says. "I am sure that this history motivated me into the helping/teaching professions." Lorna invites listeners to call in with questions as she talks about sexuality education and links it to prevention education. Lorna has taught Adolescent Sexuality & Pregnancy Prevention as well as Family Life & Human Sexuality education education courses. She is currently a teaching consult for Fordham University's Graduate School of Social Science. Her recent article, posted to the NAASCA web site, is Seize the Day: Time to illuminate the issue of child sexual abuse. It brings to light the lack of attention on the problem of child abuse even during a time when society is starting to more openly discuss sexual harassment/abuse of adults. Lorna makes clear what some of the major problems are including children socialized to view females in submissive roles to males, institutions ignoring the improper behavior, availability and access to ography, and delayed time between the abuse and disclosure. Lorna emphasizes the solutions must focus on prevention, “As a society, our default modus operandi is to be reactive, and only respond to problems after they have occurred. Let us change that. It is time for us, finally, to be proactive when it comes to child sexual abuse." We're delighted to welcome Lorna, a survivor / professional, as an active volunteer NAASCA family member!
