History: Celebration of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele.
Anna Marie Jarvis (Mai 1, 1864 - November 24, 1948) was the founder of the Mother's Day holiday in the United States. May 10, 1908 at St. Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia.
On this day (the 4th Sunday of Lent), May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation that officially estblished the first national Mother's Day holiday to celebrate America's mothers.
The most traditional Mother's Day flower symbol is the carnation. Pink carnations represent gratitude and love while red carnations signify admiration. White carnations are traditional flowers to give or wear in remembrance of a mother who is no longer living.
