Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) - 2643

Tonight's special guest is Kim Lakin from Littleton, Colorado, a child abuse survivor and activist who's the founder of 'Soar On Eagles Wings', where she teaches about prevention and intervention. Kim's an Authorized Instructor and Certified Facilitator for Darkness to Light, Stewards of Children; as well as a facilitator for The Monique Burr Foundation. She speaks from her own experience, "My abuse started when I was 5 years old, with the cousin of my friend, who lived across the street. It continued throughout my childhood by a cousin, by my stepdad and then a stranger." Now she says, "I will always be in the recovery process. I don't think that will go away. I feel that my work with facilitating has been a big part of my healing the past 4 years. I feel empowered and free when I am providing classes for the community." Kim explains, "My mom worked for a judge and my step dad worked for Animal Control. Things appeared normal on the outside; however, reality was, my parents were doing drugs in the evening and weekends. I believe God was a big part of my healing journey from the beginning. It gave me the ability to forgive." Her life is different today. "I am an Instructor and Facilitator for Darkness to Light, Stewards of children. A two-hour class for adults that teaches the 5 Steps to Protecting Children. 1. Learn The Facts; 2. Minimize Opportunity; 3. Talk About It; 4. Recognize the Signs; 5. React Responsibly. I am also a facilitator for The Monique Burr Foundation for children. I was recently in Stories of Roaring Faith and I’m working on writing a book. I have spoken for MOPs groups and churches, in addition to the classes I facilitate. I’ve also been on a few podcasts."
