Tonight's special guest is Dr. Laura Jean McGuire from New York City, a nationally recognized sexuality educator, trauma-informed specialist, and inclusion consultant who has worked with young adult survivors as well as teen parents struggling to break the cycle of abuse. Although not a survivor of child abuse, Laura did survive domestic violence. Her personal experiences and her work with others has led her to see connections between all forms of abuse. She now has made the goal of “creating a trauma-informed, culturally humble, and gender equitable world is my life's ambition and calling.” NAASCA's family members, mostly survivors, also include many activists and professionals who are a valuable part of the organization. They lend us their own specific experience, strength and hope. We're delighted to have their professional expertise, and they, in turn, learn a lot from survivors! Dr. Laura is glad for the opportunity to interview with NAASCA stating, "NAASCA is an incredible organization doing vital and very pertinent work as to what is going on in cultural discussions right now." Laura continues, "I feel so blessed to know that every day I am working towards being part of the solution instead of the problem." We invite all our NAASCA family to call in with questions or comments for Dr. Laura, as we talk about creating trauma-informed sex/prevention education and having a healthy sex/love life after childhood trauma. Laura has an ongoing column called “Ask Dr. Laura” in 'Out Smart: Houston's LGBTQ Magazine' where she openly addresses sexuality questions while promoting gender equity, queer competency, and cultural humility.
