Tonight's special guest is Angie Baker from Lexington, Kentucky, a NAASCA family member who serves as our Kentucky Ambassador. Angie estimates she was sexually abused over 1000 times between ages 2 and 11 by her uncle, her dad's brother. Her mother saw these assaults but did nothing to help. In fact, she was physically and emotionally abusive to her daughter. As she grew older, Angie became a promiscuous teenager, and was forced to have abortion by her boyfriend. "I thought I was damned to hell for being sexual before marriage," she says. She began to drink and get high to deal with her feelings. Angie met her husband after high school and shares that in her 20s she confronted her family "in a positive way." At 21 she had her tubes tied, because she was afraid she couldn't be a good mother. At one point she was misdiagnosed and was given medications for schizophrenia for 2 yrs. It took 11 tries to find the right Doctor to treat her, and in her late 20s she was diagnosed with PTSD. At this point she cut off contact with her mom and dad, but re-established a relationship in her 30s, participating in family therapy. She concentrated on raising her son, but in her 40s her husband managed to burn down the garage and house making meth. As the chaos continued her father passed away and her own family broke up. She was run out of town. Today Angie describes herself as 'serenely abnormal' which I'm sure resonates with other adult survivors of child abuse and trauma!
