Tonight's special guest is Nelson Jones from Norwood, North Carolina. Abused as a child, Nelson tells us he'd rather not get into too much detail of the child abuse he experienced but is willing to give a brief summary. For example he was abused by other children and by negligent staff in a 'bad kids' group home. Nelson became an independent sex worker at 21, from 2012-2017. "I never thought I could get substantial employment, because I had a litany of misdemeanors. I was too young to understand that those things tend to be overlooked," he says. "I turned to it because prior to that I was shoplifting and I was on Walmart and targets most wanted list and getting caught left and right. I found that I quickly became adaptable and it was much better and less risky money." He goes on, "I happened to meet an illicit masseuse and she mentally abused me, raped me, and attempted to traffic me. Afterwards I was stalked. I decided to take all the negative energy," he explains, "and funnel it into human trafficking awareness efforts. It took a while to get to this point but I now run my own awareness platform, 'Trafficking Insights'. I also volunteer through a program called 'In Our Backyard', which also has a published book of the same name that explains itself as a primer on human trafficking in North America. The book also says, "In recent years, Americans have woken up to the reality that human trafficking is not just something that happens in other countries."
